MoDA Outsized!

Exhibition

24th April – 15th June 2003

curated by Jolanta Jagiello

An outdoor group show of familiar domestic objects whose function, form and scale have been altered.

From the ridiculous to the sublime!

The new group show at MoDA provides the visitor with a bizarre and surreal take on the mundanity and familiarity of ordinary domestic objects that surround us in our homes, giving a refreshing charge to the green and leafy spaces around Barnet s MoDA. From the kitsch to the cultivated, we encounter objects as diverse as: wallpapered trees... an enormous dog... 7,000 disposable cups... seven power-generated windmills... and an earthy armchair. Hi and Lo Art sprawl laconically and humorously across the lawns, or hang from trees, or nestle by the pondside.... objects are cut, displaced, distorted and reinvented. The simplicity and clarity of the artists approach is the underlying trend, and that is what makes the group tick and the objects click. From the Popart Tesco bags of Alistair McClymont, the Surrealistic pipes and jugs combinations of Elaine Arkell, through to the sacred/profane celestial clothespeg angel of Zara Conway, we can see a multiplicity of styles and directions and influences. Everybody chooses their own path in this show, and the works are as individual and challenging as the artists themselves. MoDAs recent shows have become great sources of dynamism and energy, bringing together eclectic mixtures of styles and approaches. This freedom of expression has been greatly encouraged under the art direction and curatorship of Jolanta Jagiello, a relative newcomer to the scene, who has delivered another hit which we can all enjoy - or at least argue about !
