Loose Dogs and Loose Artists (Sculpture Trail 2008)

Marchwood is a private wood, which over time will be made more accessible to the public; it is opposite an entrance sign ˜LOOSE DOGS KEEP OUT. Its legacy seems to be shrouded in mystery, rumour has it, it was used for outdoor training activities. The remnants of which remain - quad biking circuits, clay pigeon shooting, paint balling, and various platforms, ladders and ropes. One of the main reasons for artists being involved in the development of the Sculpture Trail was to use whatever they could find or recycle in the woodland, and site their artwork in an area of their choosing. Hence the second half of the title was created - ˜LOOSE ARTISTS.

The woods are very beautiful and full of wildlife. The woods are home to rabbits and squirrels, which are very inquisitive as to what the artists are doing on site. As you walk along the main pathway you will discover artwork nestling amongst the trees and undergrowth.

The remaining artworks are off the pathways hidden deeper in the wood to encourage a fuller exploration of Marchwood. One of the locations is a beautiful lake where a gaggle of geese can be found enjoying the water. Other locations consist of, a reed bed, home to dragonflies, four abandoned tepees, and a castle-like area.

The Sculpture Trail is an on-going development for the next 5 years, which we encourage you to return again and again to see how it grows. (Adapted from a text by Diane Johnson 2008)
